Story submitted by Kitty Ketchum Ingram:
During the time that Jim was Superintendent of Bethel School, his grandson James Artice "Boots" Ketchum and Mary George Burns (who later became Boots' wife) were students there. Mary does not remember seeing a fountain pen nor any other type of ink pen at the school; neither was there any carbon paper or typewriter. The students used round cedar pencils and Big Chief tablets. Erasers came separate from the pencils and were forced onto the tops of the pencils. They also used chalk and slates. Some of the chalk was wide and flat, some round but smaller than the pencils. There were large blackboards on the walls. The school accommodated one teacher at a time, and about fifty students (kindergarten through the eighth grade). William Isaac Burns (Mary George Burns's father) was a member of the school board during that time.

James Artice and Mary were married in Ryan, Oklahoma, worked around Nellie, Oklahoma, then for the railroad for a short while. Worked for an oil company during the oil boom at Burkburnette, Texas then back to Sterling, where William was born. They moved to Oil City, near Rock Creek and Nellie, and worked for an oil company when Cecil was born. In 1922, he worked for the Coline Oil Co. where Artie got into a fight with his farm boss, a man named Wright, and was fired. He then went to work for the Gypsy Oil Co., also near Oil City, Ok. Then they moved in 1922 to a house next door to Florence and Festus G. Sparlin (Mary's sister), about 2 or 3 miles from town.

In 1923, they moved to Tuckertown, near Corsicana, Navarro Co., Texas for another oil boom. Both boys started to school there at Mildred School. Mildred is a tiny town near Corsicana. They remained in Navarro County until 1931 when Humble Oil and Refining Co. (now Exxon) transferred them to Joinerville, Texas where the East Texas oil boom was underway. He worked there, living in company housing on the L.E. Coolidge Lease for many years, until retirement. Then Artie and Mary moved to Overton. --- courtesy of Kitty Ketchum Ingram

The following poem was written by Artie on January 29, 1947 and read at the funeral of his sister, Brooksie Ketchum Booth by her great-granddaughter, Valerie Brooke Seibel:

The Dying Christian

I am going now to Heaven
My race is almost run
I am going home to Jesus
My work on earth is done.

Many years I have been a pilgrim
I have fought the battle through
And now I am coming Jesus
Dear Lord to be with you.

Yes, there has been many sorrows
And heart aches not a few
But now Dear Lord they are over
And you have seen me through.

Back when I first started
I thought I would lose the fight.
But Lord I kept on fighting
But not by my own might.

I pled the blook of Jesus
To the foe on eveyr hand
And now I have the victory
And I will view the Promised Land.

Our weapons are not carnal
We fight not with Staff nor Rod
But by the grace of Jesus
We will stand before our God.

There to be rewarded
For work that we have done
And hear the blessed Master
Say, "Child, well done".
